Looking to update your Canadian passport, you’ll need to make sure your photo meets all requirements.

Photo Tips:

Submit two color photos

  1. Be no more than 6 months before the date you submit your application

  2. be taken in person by a commercial photographer (PhotOle Photography). No selfies.

  3. Your face and shoulders centred and squared to the camera

  4. A neutral facial expression:

    • eyes open and clearly visible

    • mouth closed, no smiling

  5. Glasses, if your eyes are clearly visible and there is no glare on the lenses

  6. Hair down or up

  7. Hats and head coverings worn daily for religious beliefs or medical reasons if:

    • your full face is clearly visible

    • there are no shadows on your face

  8. A plain white or light-coloured background with a clear difference between your face and the background

Resolution Print Size and Quality Matters

Submit a high-resolution photo that is not blurry, grainy, or pixelated

  • The correct size of a passport photo is:

    • have a 3:2 aspect ratio with the camera oriented in portrait mode

    • be at least 1800 pixels high by 1200 pixels wide

    • be no larger than 4500 pixels high by 3000 pixels wide

    • be between 200 KB and 5 MB in size

    • have a chin to crown (the top of your head) measurement between 45 and 50% of the photo’s height

  • Printed on matte or glossy photo quality paper

  • Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters, or artificial intelligence

  • Do not submit photocopies or digitally-scanned photos

  • Do not submit a damaged photo with holes, creases, or smudges

  • the studio or photographer’s name

  • the studio or photographer’s address

  • the date the photo was taken

You can go to:

  • An acceptance facility that will take a photo when you apply for your passport

  • Any company which offers photo services that can also print 2x2 3/4in images

  • Be taken in person by a commercial photographer
